Just Bloggin

So, we can definitely tell that it is beginning to be spring time around campus. Not only is the weather warming up, the birds coming out to sing, and the pollen painting everything yellow, but everybody is starting to come outside. For the past week, every time I have thought about just sitting in my room for the afternoon and taking a nap or getting some projects done, I have just stepped right outside my door to find a lot of people in the yard. All of the girls bring their blankets, books and music out there and study or chat. But the guys go out there to have a different kind of fun. We throw footballs, Frisbee, play golf (using different objects around campus as "holes"), play freeze tag and pretty much just anything else you can thing off. The best part is that none of these activities are planned, everything just happens on random, it is great. I have never played golf before today, but my roommates brought out some clubs and balls and we played. I almost drilled Katie with the ball, pretty fun, I think she was upset.
People are just constantly doing things around campus. This past weekend we had out first ever Global Missions Conference which turned out a whole lot better than I though it would. I was part of the team who was planning the event and with all of the rain that came in, I thought our whole weekend would be ruined. But we worked stuff out and ACC people and students from other schools stilled made it a fun event. Plus we got to hear some pretty cool speakers and learn about missions. I also got to catch up with some old friends who go to the University of West Georgia, so it was a fun time.
Also, Dr. Billy Strother, the Preaching Professor of ACC, preached in chapel this morning. I have taken 2 of his classes and he told us to make sure and grade him the same way he grades us when we have to preach in his class. He broke a few of his own rules, but he will just say it is okay to break a rule when he knows what he is doing. I can't wait til Friday. The thing about Dr. (Bow tie) Billy is that the week of finals last semester, he was involved in a motorcycle accident and almost lost his leg, he almost lost his life. He could have just spent this whole semester sitting at home in his wheel chair, enjoying the injury pay, and just feeling sorry for himself, waiting to walk again one day. But no, Dr. Billy gets up, and with the assistance of his wife, Mrs. Carol, she dresses him, loads him in the truck, and takes care of him all day, everyday. She helps unload him at school and he spend every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings teaching classes. He actually has another surgery coming up that will bring him closer to walking so please pray for him. But his whole sermon was about playing hurt, how everyone is hurt in some way and we must be sensitive to this. It was a very good and inspirational sermon. It will probably be available on the ACC podcast.
With only 4 weeks left of classes, I am ready to get out but at the same time, I do not want it to end because I will be in England all next semester. So, I guess I will just have to make the best of times.

City of Refuge and more

So last week was pretty amazing. We had our Community Ministry Day for the 3rd semester in a row and it was another great success. Attendance by students and faculty was not the best it has ever been, but we still had an amazing turn out and got a lot of work done. I was with a group that got to walk a mile and a half through the ghetto, picking up trash all along the way. Our leader had told us that it should only take about 30 minutes to walk to this place while picking up trash, but knowing ACCers, we are really faithful to picking up trash, after 30 minutes had passed we, were still far away so we had to end up throwing our bags into the back of his truck and just walking straight there because we still had a lot to do there. When we got to the apartment complex, we split up into groups and went door to door, letting the people know about the City of Refuge and inviting them to the cookout we were going to put on for them at the complex later on that day. I was in a group with Vice President Huxford and Michael Gunnin from the business office, it was really fun. After we finished going door to door, we set up the cookout in the little picnic area they had at the complex. At first it looked like no one would really show up, but then we had a good turn out and gave away a lot of free hot dogs. The community was very appreciative.
Community ministry day is always a fun and great experience which not only benefits City of Refuge and the Simpson street community, but also the community at ACC. That day had helped us to get into the mode for the Global Missions Conference that is going on on campus this weekend. We are really getting excited about all of the students from other campuses, activities, and speakers we having going on. It is going to be really busy and really fun.
School is going good for me now. This week is a little busy and I have 30 verses to memorize for an Acts test this Friday. Sunday nights is going good and we are just having a blast in our dorm. With the Braves starting up now, I am sure we will be at a game each week. Over half of the school went to the season opener. GO BRAVES!

Back from Spring Break

So, I realized that I forgot to introduce myself in my last Blog. I am Anthony, a Sophomore at ACC. I am from Carrollton, GA and I am a Biblical Studies and Preaching Dual Major. I am involved with a lot of different activities on at the ACC campus. I play Soccer, lead the Sunday Nights service, I am a Campus Life Minister and I just like to have fun. When I graduate, I plan on doing something in the ministry whether it be with you ministry or camp ministry. I would absolutely love to start a summer camp someplace, maybe even in Alaska. I just do not know, I will just have to see what happens. In the Fall of '08 I will be traveling to Birmingham, England to be an Exchange Student with Globalscope. I am going to miss being at ACC for a semester but I am really excited about the ministry opportunities overseas.

This past week was our Spring Break and we had a lot of fun. A group of 12 of us got together and rented a condo down on New Smyrna Beach, just south of Daytona. It was nice having a week off and just getting to hang out with friends. We did everything from hanging out on the beach, watching the Space Shuttle launch at 2:28 in the morning, to going to a Chick-fil-a grand opening even in Miami. That is another cool thing we have been involved in. Whenever we hear about a Chick-fil-a grand opening anywhere around us, we get a group of people together to go. If you are within the 1st 100 people to be in line 24 hours before it open, you receive 52 #1 combo coupons. You have to stay their all night and you are not allowed to leave the parking lot. It is really a lot of fun and there it something to do the whole time you are there. When we went to the one in Miami, two of my friends got to dress up as the Chick-fil-a cows, it was really funny. We successfully went to 2 openings in 2 weeks. It is worth every second of sleep you do not get.

Now we are back to school and back to working and planning more things to do. Sometimes life just seems so busy but I cannot complain, I am having the time of my life.

An Exciting Week

This past week was really busy and fun. Last weekend 16 ACC people went to Hilton Head to GCYC to hangout with some fun high school students. We had a Nintendo Wii set up at our booth and we just had a blast all weekend. The weather was great for the beach. Then we got back to school that Sunday afternoon and that night we had a worship service around the campfire that night. Ha, it is so funny having a campfire in the middle of Atlanta but it was fun. A few friends and I all got poison oak from the wood we used for the fire, no fun at all. Wednesday in chapel was really cool too though. President Collins and Professor Mofatt did a whole interview session about sex. We actually talked about sex in chapel. They presented the issue in a very comfortable and interesting way. I think a lot of people go something out of it. On Friday was the biggie for me though, I preached my 2nd sermon ever in class on in the morning. I think it went really well except I turned a 20 minute sermon into 12 minutes because I spoke so fast. I was really nervous. That afternoon we celebrated the leap day (2/29/08) with a very preppy party (full with tea, crumpets, classical music, lawn darts, and bocce ball). Everyone dressed up very preppy like. Even Professor Huxford and some of the business office staff came down to have some fun. We have a lot of pictures on facebook from it. To finish it of, my friend Ben and I woke up and drove to REI early this morning to go to a big sale they had. We are really into caving and camping so we try to find whatever deals we can. Throw in getting in some tree climbing and just normal dorm life and we had one busy but fun week. Saturday is now my day to rest.
