I'm Too Old!

I have noticed by doing a few things this week that I am just too old. I notice that there are things I feel like I can't do now because of my age. But over the past semester, especially this past week, I have done some things that let me relive the glory days. One thing that was huge was laser tag. I went with a group of 7th graders from my church to go play laser tag. I will say that I did win and I felt like I was in the middle of a huge war and I was camping in a corner just picking people off.( If you don't know what that last sentence means it is Call Of Duty Video Game talk for hanging out in a corner and shooting anyone that comes by with out them knowing where I was at. You may say "Micheal you were playing 7th graders," but remember they had guns also! That wasn't even the glory day experience though what was awesome was the bus ride over there. The whole ride to the place was filled non stop "Yo Momma" jokes. The were coming from every direction. I remember when me and my friends used to just sit in the gym and and make up the best " Yo Momma" jokes. I can't even remember the last time I cracked a " Yo Momma " joke. It has been forever. It was a great flash back. Another thing I did was help my Youth Pastor's son with his 3rd grade math. Now that took me back. Being in college I just dream of being able to do Math that easy. All we had to do consisted of us counting the sides of shapes and writing down their name. I miss it a lot! The last thing I will talk about is my 9th grade bible study I lead with some students from my church. It's awesome. We hang out and go through the world and goof off and of course talk about girls. Its a great experience and but there is something I notice that I really miss. That is not being so independent. My guys just hang out until their mom comes and gets them. They don't have to go back and right book reports or worry about if the gas they have will get them back to school. They don't have to pay their cell phone bill or anything like that. Now don't get me wrong I love being in college and I love being able to provide for myself but I don't think it's wrong to sometimes miss being younger. So live it young have fun but always appreciate the gift at one time you young and you will most likely have kids and appreciate the fact that they will be young.

Six Feet Under the Stars

Since I have been lacking on the posts, (which is an understatement), get ready to hear from me a lot during this last stretch of the semester! I am so excited about these next few weeks here at school! This weekend is the Global Missions Conference, or as most call it the GMC. There will be lots of missionaries and organizations from around the globe, the US, and from around Atlanta as well. It'll be an awesome eye-opening experience to see what is out there for us to get involved in, and I cannot wait!
THEN in another week, we have DORM WARS! Honestly, I think I look forward to this week even more than Spring Break...yeah, it's that cool. The week is filled with friendly competitions between dorms. Each dorm has different colors and shows team spirit in their own way. This is why my post is red and black-GO LOWER HEAD HALL! You also should know that even though I am an Auburn fan (WAR EAGLE!) through and through, I will be wearing red and black during dorm wars, and that's a pretty big deal! There is everything from a spelling bee, to tug of war, to the ultimate relay.
That Thursday of the week is our Spring Campus Ministry day. On Ministry day, there are no classes and the campus is pretty much shut down in order for us to go serve the community. I always love this day! My freshmen year, I went and worked at City of Refuge in Atlanta and last semester at God's Farm. Both were great experiences, so I look forward to seeing what God has in store this year!
Also during that week, we have Spring Formal, which is on a boat this year! How sweet is that?! It'll be at Stone Mountain and it's always fun to dress up and dance the night away!
Okay, maybe I am getting ahead of my self a little by being so excited for these things when it's a week and a half a way, but can you blame me? :)

Take them off

Do you ever remember walking into your house with your shoes on? What is the first thing that you were told to do? They would point at your shoes and say "Take them off." That was always the thing to do and it's still in me because that's what I do when I visit people and walk into my room. This week is the week of compassion. Basically we as a community go without something for a day to see what it is like and help donate things in the process. Yesterday was no shoes day.Now of course I am not the type of person to walk outside all day and around campus without my shoes on, but it was for a good cause. I didn't wear my shoes but I did still wear socks to support the cause (my bare foot touching the ground was definitely not going to happen). It was very hard to get used to and I was slightly tempted to complain, but I was reminded of the people that don't have flip flops to put on their feet. Once I thought about that my mind was clear and I had no other worries. For the rest of the day I walked to class, ate in the cafeteria, and even gave a tour without my shoes on. Ever since I can remember, I have had a pair of socks on (especially if I need a pedicure) or I'll wear a different pair of shoes. But it never occurred to me that somebody in the world doesn't have.
It was quite a humbling experience for me to participate and it made it even more humbling when I saw my fellow classmates and even my roommate supporting the cause as well. My feet kind of hurt now, but I can't complain because somebody out in the world doesn't have the same opportunity that I have. So the next time you complain about not having the right shoes to wear to go with your outfit or the next time you complain about not having enough shoes to wear and you already have 5 or 6 pairs stop and think about somebody that doesn't have any shoes at all. I guarantee that you will have a new found respect for the ones that you do have. -Deene

Hey guys! Sorry it's been a while. Life has been really crazy the past few weeks. A week ago we had Spring Break and I didn't go anywhere exciting. I spent the week unpacking because my family just moved and it was really cold and rainy here in Georgia. But despite all of that I did get to spend some time lounging around which is the ideal break to me.
My junior voice recital is tonight; I have been working very hard for this night and I am super nervous. I trust that God will pull me through though because I have put in the effort to make sure that this a a really good show. After tonight, things will start winding down a little bit and I will be one more day closer to summer!!! I know for some of you things are probably starting to pick up and get a little stressful with projects and papers, but hang in there. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel; we are almost to the finish line.

Home Stretch

I am an education major here at Atlanta Christian College! I have always had a passion for working with children! I feel as if you can learn so much from them. I am in a class called Educational Foundations! This class covers the basics for education! I was assigned a project in which I was to write an essay about children and or workers other than teachers in the school. I decided to do both, I interviewed some workers and I worked with the kids.
I decided to work in my mom's second grade special education class. There i helped them get simple everyday work done and I just spent time with the kids. This day allowed me to learn so much. I realized that Patience is key in managing a classroom. Without this you will unable to have a classroom. My mom was so amazing at this. She had these kids under so much control. I loved watching her.
When I was working with these kids, It confirmed me wanting to be a teacher. I want to help these children and effect them in the long run. I feel that Atlanta Christian College is going to prepare me well for this job and the journey I have ahead of me.

Make my own plans? sure thing

College is different from high school in many ways. One being...

Advisement:Students meet with the head of the department in which they are majoring in to make their new class schedule. I love making my own schedules! I am sure I have already mentioned in previous posts that I enjoy the fact that we get to decide whether or not we want to wake up early...or late for class. This opportunity puts much pressure on you as a student. There are some things you might want to ask yourself (especially if you are a freshman):

1. If I sign up for classes that all start later in the day, will I be stuck with early classes my junior and senior year?
answer: This depends on the class. Some of the classes here at ACC need to be paid attention to. For example, one of the classes that I took (for an elective) was only offered every other semester. Be sure to plan out as far in advance as possible. No one wants to graduate late!!! :/
2. Is it a good idea to register for only Tuesday and Thursday classes so I can sleep in on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday?
answer: Depends... Some people can handle it, but there are a few stories that I have heard about it not being the best idea. Some people have said that it throws off their sleeping patterns. It may just be easier to wake up everyday around the same time so you don't have a crazy schedule and terrible sleeping pattern. Then again...If you are hard on yourself, you can make yourself study on those days that you don't have class. You may could use those days to work a part time job, who knows?
3. Should I start with my core classes first, and then work my way into the classes that deal with my major?
answer: It is always good (and safe) to get your core classes out of the way during your first two years. You will most likely change your major a few times before you are really settled.
4. How many hours should I take my first couple of semesters?
answer: I highly suggest that you load up at the beginning! No one wants to be a senior who has to take 21 hours (trust me, I know people who are doing that right now-not fun). Once you graduate high school and soon begin college, you will be used to a lot of classwork, homework, and study time. Don't be scared to take 5 to 7 classes (15-18 credit hours). It is really not as scary as some people make it out to be. Give it a shot. They give you a week or so to drop/add classes with no penalty. If you get a bad vibe, then drop the class; no worries.

With advisement coming, I thought I would post a few tips for you. Hope you learned something! :) Good Luck

Field Trip!

I'd intended to make this post all thoughtful and metaphorical and poetic, but sometimes that kind of thing is beyond my capacities. Like right now.

Over the weekend, Dr. Strother took a group of twenty-ish preaching majors to the National Preaching Summit in Indianapolis, Indiana. We left Sunday morning (too early) and got back last night (too late). We heard great sermons, attended excellent workshops, and met preaching students from other schools in our fellowship. All in all, a great weekend, never mind the twenty-four hours spent in a school van.

So here's the point: if I had chosen to attend any other college besides (almost)Point University, I wouldn't have done that. I don't want to be a preacher; I'm taking preaching classes purely for self-indulgence. But even with that, I probably wouldn't have been allowed to take classes, much less major in, preaching at any other school within my religious tradition (not without a fight, at least).

For me, the best thing about (almost)Point University is that the administration, the staff, and the faculty are willing to educate me (fifty years ago, this would be somewhat shocking) (which I, personally, find shocking). I'm entering what has been a male-dominated field and it's incredible to be learning under professors who encourage me to do what I want to do and what God is leading me towards no matter whether he's leading me behind a pulpit or in front of a white board.

I guess that last bit was a bit poetic after all. :)

Breaking into Spring.

It is not yet April and there are already plenty of Spring Showers (rainy days) Last week was our Spring Break and it was FANTASTIC. I'm sure everyone spent it doing fun and productive things, but I spent mine reading (The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and East of Eden by John Steinbeck - both great books!) watching movies (too many to list) and catching up on some much needed sleep. Oh, and did I mention that I got to spend it with one of my best friends Elsie? That was definitely the best part.

L-R: Elsie and I. :)

That might sound incredibly lazy, but to me, it also sounds incredibly heavenly. Because the best thing about having a "break" is not having to do anything, right? So you would think that Professors wouldn't assign homework and whatnot, right? Well, I have three midterms this week so even though I neglected to do any work over break, I am now back in school full force and studying my brains out. (Not literally though, that would be really gross...)

But despite all the studying, I do have to say that I can't help but be joyful. I love spring and I love warmer weather so I can't help but be in a good mood even while studying for tests. Now, when I have to start on my four huge research papers it might be a different story ...

But! I will be happy and drink some lemonade for now.
Here's to a lovely Spring afternoon.

What's in a name?

So the thing I have been hearing most often about the move of our school is that people don't like the name change. Being a senior it was weird at first, I'll be the last graduating class of ACC, and ACC had been my home for four years. I decided to embrace all the changes, including the name yet still people say to me that not having the name "Christan" in the name of our school will keep the school from being a Christian influence on the world. I strongly disagree, and I'll give you a reason why.
Over Spring Break I helped my younger sister find the apartment we are going to be living in when I graduate in May. Earlier in the week I called several complexes and there was one woman who was very polite and helpful and answered all of my questions. I asked her name (Terry) and wrote down on my notes how nice she was. When my sister and I went to look at several places last Saturday, Terry ended up being one of the people who showed us around and let us view different floor plans. While standing in the apartment that will become mine and my sister's on May 7th, she asked what I do and I told her I was still in college but wanted to become a writer.
Her face lit up as she began to go on and on about her favorite author and speaker, Joyce Myer. Up until this point Terry had no idea I was a Christian, but she saw this one opportunity to share her faith with, through something not many people would find faith related at all.
So, if we desire to be Christians in a non-Christian world with out that word attached to us, all we have to do is be like Terry and jump on that opportunity the second it presents it's self.

Spring Break 2011

Spring Break was awesome. I got to go to my former high school and I got to share some great information about ACC soon to be Point University. They were really interested, especially about Point University. I also got to share some of my college experiences with them. The school Counselor Mr. McWhorter, ask if I had any advice for the students and I most certainly did.

1. Remember High School is Over

2. Responsibility Kicks In

3. STUDY STUDY STUDY!!!!

4. Most importantly HAVE FUN!!!!

College is definitely a place to learn, but its also a place to have fun and to make it as memorable as possible. Choose everything WISELY.

Epic Fail

SGA (Student Government Association) plans weekly events for the students here at ACC/Point. I am the sophomore representative on SGA which is cool because I can give my opinion as to what is fun and what is lame! :) As a group, we decided to take a bunch of students to a bowling ally...FOR FREE! It was an epic plan that had everyone excited.

So, we arrive at the bowling ally and walked in as one huge group. I kid you not, the moment we walked in, a man gets on the intercom and announces "Just a reminder, the ally will be closing in 20 minutes due to a private party." All of us, in utter shock, began to look around the bowling ally with our jaws dropped, along with some laughter. I made eye contact with the SGA president Storey Brown and said "Are we the private party?" As her eyes looked back and forth a few times, she replied with a "nooo....? We even called them to make sure it would be available!" We were all so mad! I mean, hello!???? it was going to be free!

Now was time for "epic plan B."

After a quick vote, we decided to go to a movie...for free :) Turned out to be really exciting! As a college student, you realize the fun and happiness that comes out of events that are already paid for. :)

Great day! It wasn't completely an epic fail.

Spring Break!!!!

After a tough week of studying for mid terms and cramming for tests it is time to relax! But, being in college I believe that we never get to truly relax! My break has consisted of being buried in homework and protects. Along with being buried in homework I have come to miss my ACC or Point University family! I never realized how many amazing people go here!
That is what is so great about the school. The facilities may be beautiful, the dorms comfortable, the food tasty but the people here are just incredible. No matter what kind of day you are having or mood you are in they will be there for you no matter what. This does not only go for the students the professors are that way to. They truly care for your well being. I was sick earlier this semester and had to miss a week of classes. It made me feel like I mattered when some of my teachers emailed me back just to check on me. It shows that you are missed and that you matter in that class.
Along with having amazing professors the staff that makes ACC is great! Having the opportunity to work in the Admission Office I get to see first hand the behind the scenes of the school. I also get to interact with a lot people that made the school run. They work so hard to make there job look so very easy! But, i know they have times when they stress! Everyone from the grounds crew to the academic office people are very caring and nice. They truly care about the school and the students who attend.
That is what makes ACC such an amazing place. You can see that God is really at work with the people here. I am pretty sure that I have not encountered one mean person or one bad teacher. Its an amazing place to be! I thank God everyday that he has placed me here in such a loving environment.

What we Do for the "NEW" News...

YOU'VE GOT MAIL! Can you remember the last time you got one of these guys in the mail from your school? What would be the first thing that you would do after reading this? (Or not reading this for some of you) "Ding Ding Ding" You answered correct! Throw it away. It's true once you look at something in the mail once and it's not money we have a tendency to either throw it away or let it sit on the table as if it's not important. (I do that sometimes) Have you ever stopped to think about how it got to you or who mailed it to you? Well here goes.. It all started last week I was in the office and was helping to put address labels on the post cards as well as stamps. It sounds easy I know. But not when you've got a million of these guys to get mailed out. Me and another worker had split them up and were working as a team but unfortunately she had to leave early. So here I am in the office all alone with no help. Just me. I needed a faster method on how I could get them done in a certain period of time. First things first put all of the address labels on them. That was the easy part. The next thing I had to do was put on the stamps. That's when my wheels started spinning in my head. I had gotten an idea. Put as many stamps on your hand as possible and peel them off to put on the post card I thought. Now I know this sounds a little crazy but it worked!!!!!!!! I'll tell you what.. It made the time fly by, but it also made my hands super duper ashy. (That's a story for another day).
Now, I know you're probably wondering what is up with the title. "What we do for the "NEW" News.. Basically I want you to understand how it works in the Admissions office. Now I can't speak for everybody, but as far as the environment is concerned I would rate it a 1 million percent. It's so positive and we have some of the best hardworking staff you'll ever meet. We find ways to get things done like I did. We don't have machines that bring the students to the campus, but people. The same people that called you when you had some interest in the school. Thats why you're here. I have such a respect for them and my hands ;) So the next time you get a post card from your school do us all a favor and think about how it got to you and most importantly whose hand was your stamp on before it got to you. -Deene-

Welcome to West Point

A few Saturdays ago, a whole bunch of ACC students, staff, and family went to West Point. It was my first time and I was super excited! It definitely did not disappoint.

We went to a town hall meeting and met adorable old people and got to give our input about changes we would like to see in West Point. The people there are always trying to better West Point. They are most excited about how Point University will better their town. West Point is adorable, the people are adorable! They can't wait until we get there.

The 507 Building, where all of our classes will be, is huge! It has a gorgeous courtyard and the building is going to be remodeled and glass walls will lead to the courtyard! The 507 Building is downtown. Downtown West Point is so cool. There are cute , little shops and Johnny's Pizza. There is also a really cool, contemporary church literally around the corner from the 507 Building.

The apartments blew me away! They are so nice. There are two bedrooms, a bath, a living room, a dining room, a kitchen, and EVEN a little balcony.
Right behind the apartments is the Sportsplex. It has an inside pool, a gym, racquet ball, and so much more!

I can't wait to be in West Point where we can expand the ACC/Point University community. God has blessed Point University with an incredible new location that will not only be fun, but be an amzing opportunity to share Christ with our new community.

Visiting West Point

Hey everyone! A few weeks ago, a bunch of us students had the awesome opportunity to visit the city of West Point (where we will be relocating!) and got to tour the campus, see the apartments, and meet some of the residents. But I'm sure you're thinking, "man, I wish I could see all that take place!" Well I've good news for you, lovely people. I made a short video of the trip! I know, too good to be true.

Check it out! And keep your eyes open for more videos like this in the future. (Point University is on the move!)

Point University Students Visit West Point from Point University on Vimeo.

Also - happy Spring Break to everyone! Get lots of sun, sleep, and fun in.

Chess Club @ Point University

We now have a chess club @ ACC soon to be Point University. As of February 10, 2011 SGA voted unanimously on the new chess club. All are welcome to come and participate whether you have experience or not. I am willing to teach all who are willing to learn.

Benefits of having a chess team will allow potential students to come a be a part of our school who are non athletic. It will even teach athletes to think ahead on the field or on the court. It is also good for remembering math formulas for those not so good at math. (hint)

I love this game and I know you all will once you learn, it allows you to use your brain in ways you never thought possible.

SEE YA LATER!

SHOT OUT TO JOSEPH PIETTE WHO HELPED MADE THIS POSSIBLE.

THE CHESS SETS ARE IN BTW!
